F. Schubert-B. Smetana – Der Neugierige, Op. 10 No. 2 (Řepková)

Like many of Smetana’s virtuoso compositions, the transcription of Schubert’s song Der Neugierige was composed during the composer’s stay in Sweden. Apart from this one he has also arranged another song from Die schöne Müllerin, Trockne Blumen, which is now unfortunately missing. It is immediately apparent that in comparison with Liszt’s faithful transcriptions, this is much more of a concert paraphrase with Smetana’s unique writing which we know from Fantasy on Czech Folksongs for example. As a result, it quickly pulls away from the narrative of the original song.
