Lineage : Generations of Realism at Salmagundi

The 20th century saw the rise of the virtue of individualism as the essential characteristic of the artist in society. Artists were no longer parts of schools or movements, but perceived as unique individuals who broke molds, developed singular visions, and original expressive styles. They were expected to emerge, like Athena, fully grown from the head of Zeus. In truth, art has rarely arisen in culture except in community, with the influence and collaboration of network of teachers, organizations and friends who shape our philosophy, processes, and context in which our work is received. Lineage is an exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures that illuminates how The Salmagundi Club has encouraged generations of artists, and stewarded the well of creative practices from which we all draw.
