Riding Amtrak’s Capitol Limited from Chicago, IL to Washington, DC.

On February 15th, I traveled on the overnight train #30, the eastbound Capitol Limited, from Chicago to Washington, DC, on the first leg of my journey down to Lynchburg, VA, to visit a FB friend (who attends Liberty University) with whom I collaborate on some online ministry stuff. Amtrak’s Capitol Limited travels on the Norfolk Southern Chicago Line from Chicago to Cleveland, OH. At Cleveland, the train heads southeast on CSX trackage down to Pittsburgh, PA. At Pittsburgh, the tracks parallel the Youghiogheny River, down to Cumberland, MD. The main highlight of the run between Pittsburgh & Cumberland, is going through the Alleghenies via Sand Patch Grade. At Cumberland, the train travels within the vicinity of the Potomac River, from Cumberland on to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, the site of John Brown’s famous raid of 1859.
