Medical Care in Russia: An American Wake-Up Call

I was in excruciating pain, but I avoided the doctor for months because I was worried about the astronomical medical costs I would face in the United States. The thought of spending thousands or even hundreds of thousands of U.S. dollars for a simple doctor’s visit or surgery terrified me. Today, in Russia, I paid so little with no insurance, and I got the treatment I needed. As a non-citizen, I am extremely grateful to be here, but my heart aches for those back in the U.S. who avoid medical care because of the cost. It’s troubling to see the U.S. government focusing more on policing the world and supplying weapons to other nations than addressing the health needs of their own citizens. It’s time for a change.
