Iceland’s Volcano Crisis: Battle To Save Homes And Power in Grindavik
The town of Grindavik in Iceland has been on high alert for the past two weeks due to the threat of a volcanic eruption. However, authorities have recently downgraded the alert level from emergency to danger. While this means that the chances of an eruption in the town itself have decreased, the evacuation zone remains dangerous. Residents, who were evacuated over a week ago, are now scattered in different parts of Iceland, anxiously waiting to see what will happen next.
The main concern now is the possibility of an eruption occurring four kilometres northeast of Grindavik. If this happens, the lava could flow down the slopes and potentially reach the town or even a nearby geothermal and hydroelectric power station that provides electricity to 30,000 homes in the area.
The authorities are facing a dilemma in terms of how to handle this situation. Providing electric heaters to affected families could overload the grid, causing a serious problem. They are exploring different options, including drilling for alternative water sources and building a protective wall around the power station and a popular tourist spot called the Blue Lagoon.
