Postcard-perfect beaches, luxury resorts, and a solid tourism infrastructure are what draw many tourists to the Dominican Republic. The diverse geography, which ranges from lush forests and mountains to semi-desert areas, also creates unique opportunities for travelers who want more than a simple beach vacation.
If you’re in the mood for a Caribbean holiday, the Dominican Republic is the place to go. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti in the Greater Antilles. The island is where Christopher Columbus made his first stop in the New World in 1492 and which later became the first capital of the Spanish empire in the Americas. You’ll find plenty of evidence of the country’s Spanish heritage.
Today, however, people visit the Dominican Republic for its beautiful sandy beaches, clear waters and water sports activities. Off-shore activities include deep sea fishing and whale watching.
Ranging from the brochure-worthy beaches of Punta Cana in the east (and all the uber-luxurious resort hotels that go with them) to the wild and cloud-topped mountain peaks of the Central Mountains in the west (the highest in the Caribbean), the paradisaical sands of Isla Saona in the southern swells to the virgin rainforests of Los Haitises on the north shore, it’s easy to see how the Dominican Republic commands such a respected and loved place as one of the top touristic draws in the region.
Punta Cana’s exotic resorts boast with some of the countries finest spots for gourmet dining and spa treatments, while Cabarete is most definitely the place to stay if you fancy kite-surfing and windsurfing.
Santo Domingo adds all the right amounts of flavor to your trip by spicing up your nightlife routine with a booming party scene, while Las Terrenas and Bayahibe is designed to bring things down a notch with lazy afternoons on the beach and guided boat tours for some whale and dolphin watching. San Felipe is your place to stay if you have a family vacation in mind and promises to give your itinerary a decent boost with things to do and see.
Independent travelers who want to escape from this scene can head to remote areas of the country, like the Samaná Peninsula, the mountainous interior, or the less tourist-focused towns and cities. Surfers and kiteboarders will find exactly what they’re looking for in places like Cabarete. And no place in the Caribbean delivers on history quite like the colonial zone in Santo Domingo.
