A Milky Way experience in time-lapse
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Find a dark location
The first step is to find a location that has minimal light pollution and a clear view of the southern sky (in the northern hemisphere) or the northern sky (in the southern hemisphere). Light pollution is the artificial light that comes from cities, towns, and other sources that can wash out the stars and make them less visible. You can use websites like or apps like Dark Sky Finder to find dark locations near you.
You also want to make sure that the weather is clear and there are no clouds blocking your view of the stars. You can check the weather forecast and the cloud cover using websites like or apps like Sky Guide. Ideally, you want to shoot on a moonless night or when the moon is below the horizon, as the moonlight can also interfere with your exposure.
