Various shots of Katherine Kramer, a young woman who has just been chosen as the ’Ideal Secretary’ in America, sitting at a desk with a typewriter before her. She lists the qualities that she thinks an ideal secretary should have, including taking pride in her work and appearance, being efficient, cheerful and sympathetic, but not overly so. She must be able to cheer up her boss if he has an attack of the blues, but this does not mean giving him a pat on the cheek - “Friendship is necessary but familiarity is taboo.“ Katherine goes on to say she is not in favour of dates with her employer, but is not opposed to dates in general, and thinks three or four dates a week break the monotony.
