“Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In)“ became The First Edition’s first big hit since they formed in 1967.
The First Edition originally included: Kenny Rogers (vocals, bass guitar), Mickey Jones (drums, percussion), Terry Williams (vocals, guitar), Mike Settle (guitar, vocals), and Thelma Camacho (vocals).
While promoting “Just Dropped In,“ The First Edition was featured in the second episode of Laugh-In on January 29, 1968. During their performance they wander around what appears to be a taxidermist shop. Combined with the lyrics it adds a rather freaky effect to the song. (As seen in this video)
“Just Dropped In“ peeked at #5 for two weeks (March 16 and 23, 1968) on USA Billboard magazine’s Top 100 Singles music charts. The song also became a hit around the world.
Songwriter Mickey Newbury was friends with Kenny Rogers growing up in Houston, Texas.
