’Grand Dieu Sauve Le Roi’ - French Royalist Song

The King Louis mentioned in the lyrics is Louis XIV of France, known as the Sun King, reigned from 1643 until death in 1715, the longest reign in history. His era is often referred to as the age of absolutism, by the consolidation of royal power and the establishment of centralised government. Louis XIV is renowned for building the Palace of Versailles, which became the political and cultural epicentre of France. This songs origin is highly controversial, a popular myth in France today is that it was creating by Jean-Baptiste Lully for Louis XIV after recovering from illness, and later would be taken to Britain by Handel in the early 18th century. The claim of the song being from the 1600s is barely supported, and much of its evidence points to 19th century forgery, and some of the most credible evidence at all is widely misdated and incorrect. So in my opinion this song comes from France sometime after Britain adopts God Save the King in the 1740s and onwards, most likely from the Bourbon Restoration, so anywhere from 1814 to 1830 ish.
