異国の丘 / Ikoku no oka / Foreign Hill
- Japanese Popular Song (Soldier’s Song)
Singer: Unknown
Performer: Japan Victor Orchestra
Hi everyone! This time I translated “Ikoku no oka“ by request.
[About this song]
This song was sung by Japanese prisoners of war, who were forced to work in harsh conditions while being interned in the Soviet Union. The original song was the military song “Dai-koanrei toppa enshu no uta (Song of the breakthrough exercises at the great Xing’anling)“ composed by Tadashi Yoshida, and Koji Masuda later added the lyrics to it. It became popular in Japan after a former POW soldier who had returned to Japan in 1948 sang it on a TV program. Its lyrics describe the pain and longing felt by the prisoners, who were separated from their homeland.
