Can the two-handed greatsword (spadone/montante/zweihander) be used one handed?
People asked me if the two-handed sword (AKA montante, spadone, zweihander or bidenhander) could be used one-handed. Well yes it can and in fact we see one-handed techniques in a few of the two-handed sword treatises, often to thrust, occasionally to cut. However we should be under no misconception that you can comfortably used a two-handed sword easily or regularly in one hand. It is a great big heavy weight and as shown here fairly slow in one hand. Therefore the techniques where you do use it in one hand are special techniques intended for specific circumstances - most of the time you would absolutely be using it with both hands.
