A report issued by a United Nations-appointed expert suggests there are substantial grounds to believe that Israel is engaging in genocide within the besieged Gaza Strip. According to Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Israel has likely violated three out of five acts outlined in the UN Genocide Convention. Albanese’s report, titled “Anatomy of a Genocide,“ contends that Israel’s actions demonstrate an intent to physically eliminate Palestinians as a collective group. Israel swiftly dismissed the report, labeling it as a distortion of reality. The report lists the violations as killing group members, causing severe physical or mental harm, and intentionally imposing conditions aimed at the group’s physical destruction. Albanese highlights Israel’s significant casualties inflicted upon Palestinians in Gaza, with over 30,000 reported deaths and thousands more missing or presumed dead.
