The votes were cast just before sunrise after a group of conservatives, who opposed the bill, engaged in a six-hour-long overnight filibuster. In the end, 22 Republican Senators gave their support. The legislation will now move ahead to discover its fate in the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Republicans. The aid package must be approved by both houses of Congress before President Biden can sign it into law.
