In full: ‘We cannot rule out state involvement’ - suspected China cyber-attack on MoD | Grant Shapps
Grant Shapps, the Defence secretary, has said there is “potential evidence of failings” from a contractor hired by the Ministry of Defence to run the armed forces payment network which was targeted in a suspected cyber-attack from China.
He said a specialist review of the contractor is underway.
Addressing the House of Commons, he said the cyber-attack “was the suspected work of a malign actor” which compromised a “contractor-run network”.
Mr Shapps told MPs: “This incident is further proof the UK is facing rising and evolving threats. We cannot rule out state involvement from elsewhere.”
He said that in a “small number of cases”, addresses and bank details were hacked.
He said that there was “no evidence” that any data has been removed and the relevant service personnel have been informed.
