New Delhi police arrest 10 people for illegally selling kidneys for transplants
Ten people, including two doctors, have been arrested in connection with a kidney racket in New Delhi. A gang allegedly targeted homeless people and illegally sold their kidneys for transplants. The police said at least a dozen such transplants have taken place over the past six months. The victims were paid about US$1,300 to US$4,000 for a kidney, which were then sold for more than 10 times that amount. A shortage of transplant organs has fuelled black market trade across India for years.
