Olaf Scholz has been elected as chancellor of Germany, marking a new era in German political life. Scholz was sworn in by President Frank Walter Steinmeier at a short ceremony in Berlin. Earlier, Scholz, a former finance minister, won a parliamentary vote to make him the leader of a new three-party coalition government with the Green party and the business-friendly FDP. He replaces Chancellor Angela Merkel who is stepping down after 16 years in the post. He’s promised to make Europe’s largest economy greener and fairer while continuing Merkel’s foreign policy approach.
