Heavy rains plunged Germany’s Frankfurt airport into chaos on Wednesday night, leading to the cancelation of about 100 flights and numerous delays.
The rain flooded the runway, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded on planes for hours.
Videos posted on social media showed that most of the runway was covered in water.
Ground services at the airport had to be stopped altogether for more than two hours. More than 20 flights bound for Frankfurt were diverted to other airports.
The airport operator said in a statement that yesterday’s weather conditions will affect Thursday’s flight schedule and could lead to further cancelations and delays.

By late afternoon, large amounts of water had accumulated on sections of the runway, leaving passengers stranded on landed planes but unable to disembark.
A video from the airport has circulated on social media showing planes parked in significant standing water with lightning flashing in the background.
According to the Frankfurt Airport website , about 70 flights were canceled due to the inclement weather .
Ground services were halted for more than two hours, an airport spokesman confirmed.
The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued a warning for the entire state of Hesse for severe thunderstorms forecast for Wednesday evening.
Rain, hurricane-force winds and lightning accompanying the severe thunderstorms caused numerous calls to firefighters in the central German state of Hesse, where the airport is located.
Between 20:00 and 23:00 local time, the weather service reported rainfall of up to 60 liters per square meter in some parts of the region.
Meteorologists recorded more than 25,000 lightning strikes in one hour, local public broadcaster Hessische Rundfunk reported.
Hurricane-force winds were blowing at 81 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour) in Griesheim and 71 kilometers per hour in Offenbach.
The storm swept over southwestern Germany late Wednesday night, throwing up huge amounts of water and reportedly unleashing more than 25,000 lightning discharges in about an hour.
Frankfurt airport said it was forced to cut 90 flights and another 23 were diverted to land at other airports.
Some passengers slept on cots and many spent the night in an airport hotel.
“The situation is likely to stabilize again today,“ a spokesman told AFP.
“There are still passengers here who need to be booked on new flights.“
The fire department in Germany’s financial capital said they had carried out more than 500 storm-related operations between late Wednesday and early Thursday.
They said there were more than 350 cases of water flooding buildings and 17 fallen trees, adding that freelance personnel were called in to help.
The storm also affected other areas, with Gelsenkirchen in the North Rhine-Westphalia region particularly hard hit.
According to the fire department, streets, basements and residential areas below were quickly flooded and trees fell, trapping cars.
Emergency workers evacuated people from vehicles at several underpasses.
Parked cars flooded in one neighborhood, and some streets could only be navigated by inflatable boats.
Experts say climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of flooding.
Frankfurt airport had to suspend operations due to heavy rain that hit the city on Wednesday. Dozens of flights were canceled, there were cases when passengers could not get out of airplanes after landing due to flooding of the airport premises.
Adverse weather, including thunderstorms, is forecast for several parts of central, southeastern, southwestern and western Germany through early August 17. Heavy rain was recorded between 20:00 and 23:00 local time in Frankfurt.
According to local public broadcaster Hessische Rundfunk, meteorologists recorded more than 25,000 lightning strikes in about an hour. Indeed, the videos circulating online clearly show the severity of the weather conditions.
