Walked almost alone, and as it was so early in the life of the volcano the trail was a bit tricky to follow, but after a 1,5h hike - I saw lava shooting up in the air in the distance. It was maybe 15-20 people in the whole valley at the time, and pretty foggy. And absolutely stunning. I spent almost 9 hours in the valley.
