Son of the Regiment This channel has already posted briefly about young heroes who defended the USSR during the Great Patriotic War (сделать ссылку на пост о Сергее Алёшкове), and this post is a logical continuation of the topic. In 1944, the war correspondent Valentin Kataev wrote the story “Son of the Regiment“ about Ivan Solntsev, who became a composite character of a boy soldier. Orphaned because of the war, Ivan wandered for a long time through the occupied territory until he was found behind enemy lines by scouts of an artillery battery and brought to their unit. The commanding officer, Captain Yenakiev, ordered to send him to the front headquarters to hand him over to an orphanage, but stubborn Ivan decided otherwise and proved to everyone by his observation skills and cleverness that he wants and is able to be a defender, so now Red Army private Solntsev is an artillery gun crew member and takes part in full-fledged combat operations. So, in the second half of the war the front under the blows of the Red Army is inexorably rolling westwards, towards the fascist lair, but the enemy still has enough forces to fight back and carry out noticeable attacks. Yenakiev’s battery, in which Ivan now serves, takes part in another battle and, having advanced to support the infantry formations, takes an unprepared firing position. The enemy, having gathered his forces and having chosen a suitable moment, makes a counter-attack and moves towards the artillerymen... (A little explanation: in 1981, in the USSR a film by the same name was made based on the story, an excerpt from which we are showing. Before the battle, two captains, infantry and artillery ones, are talking. They have been fighting together for a few years, they can almost read each other’s thoughts, and they are also well aware of the situation in which their units find themselves.)
