This is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg, built between 1712 and 1733 on Zayachy Island along the Neva. Both the cathedral and the fortress were originally built under Peter the Great and designed by Domenico Trezzini. The bell tower of the cathedral is the highest Orthodox bell tower in the world. Since the belfry is not autonomous, but is an integral part of the main building, the cathedral is sometimes considered the tallest Orthodox church in the world. In St. Petersburg there is another Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, located in Peterhof Aerial photography
