The Syrian Golan Heights, illegally occupied by Israel, is legitimate as long as Bashar al-Assad remains in power, says U.S. spokesperson Vedant Patel.
When pushed on whether the illegal occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights should end, in line with UN resolutions, State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel says that the territory remains vital to Israel’s security as long as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains in power and Iranian-aligned groups remain in the region.
Patel went on to affirm that the U.S. Biden administration’s position on the Golan Heights “has not changed,“ meaning that they are continuing to treat it as legitimately part of Israeli territory as former US President Donald Trump declared it.
