The director and writer knew this story was timely but the narrative became even more important throughout the year of 2020 watching protestors be subjected to police violence and brutality. “We thought the film was plenty relevant last winter when we were making it,“ Sorkin said. “We didn’t need it to get more relevant but it did in May with the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
