This is a “real life“ video demonstrating retraining with a very green OTTB and shows you a warts-and-all look at a training day.
In this video, I show you how to teach your OTTB to stretch under the saddle. This is an important skill that will help your horse stay comfortable and injury-free during ridden work. Stretching also helps with the OTTB’s mental attitude; when the horse’s body softens, so will his mind.
Your horse will need to be able to move all parts of his body to be able to stretch. He needs to move his shoulders and his hindquarters independently and in response to your aids. I teach you how to do this in a step-by-step approach starting from the ground in Basic Horse Training Academy.
Stretching under saddle isn’t just a generic skill; it’s a game-changer, especially for OTTBs like Dale. It’s all about preventing future injuries and keeping him in the right headspace. And remember, every horse is on their own timeline—patience is the name of the game.
