It was classified as a mid sized SUV in older generations, and was later reclassified as a full sized SUV, supposedly rivaling the full sized Land Cruiser such as the LC80, LC100, and LC200, but in reality, still has roughly the same dimensions as most mid sized SUVs. It was released in 1999 in Japan as the NM Pajero, and later on facelifted in 2002/2003 and was called the NP Pajero.
