Probably the most famous Victorian poem by Ethyl Lynn Beers, The Picket Guard was originally published in Harper’s Weekly in 1861. In 1863, the poem was turned into a song by John Hill Hewitt. This may have inspired the title of the English translation of “All Quiet on the Western Front.“
