Democratic Republic of the Congo: Displaced residents return to volcano-hit Goma

Subscribe to our channel! The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo started the phased return of residents to volcano-hit Goma, on Tuesday. Buses transported the displaced from Sake where temporary shelters had been set up for the locals, to Goma. “I want to send a message to the entire population of North Kivu province, especially to the people who had moved to Sake that the provincial government is there to accompany them,“ said Vice-Governor of North Kivu Province Romy Ekuka who announced the planned return. Mount Nyiragongo, located 12 kilometres (7.4 miles) from Goma, erupted on May 22 forcing thousands to flee their homes, and leaving hundreds, including at least 170 children feared to be missing. This is the first volcanic eruption at Mount Nyiragongo, considered to be one of the world’s most active volcanoes, since the last eruption in 2002 that left 250 dead and 120,000 homeless. --- SOT, Romy Ekuka, Vi
