During World War II, a number of German physicians conducted painful and often deadly experiments on thousands of prisoners without their permission. Considering the inhumane conditions, lack of consent, and questionable research standards, modern scientists overwhelmingly reject the use of results from experiments in the camps. Human rights in Germany enjoy a high level of protection, both in theory and in practice, and are enshrined in the Grundgesetz. The country has ratified most international human rights treaties. Genocide is the intentional destruction of a people in whole or in part. In 1948, the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group“. Decomposition was a secret police method used by the GDR Ministry for State Security (MfS) . It served to combat perceived and actual political opponents . The disintegration measures defined in Directive No. 1/76 on the development and processing of operational operations (OV), which came into force in January 1976, were used by the MfS primarily in operational operations against opposition groups and individuals in the 1970s and 1980s . Applied almost entirely in a conspiratorial manner , they replaced the open terror of the Ulbricht era . As a repressive persecution practice, the methods of decomposition consisted of extensive, secret control and manipulation functions and subtle forms of sophisticated psychological terror extending into the victims’ most personal relationships. The Stasi made use of the network of “ unofficial employees ” (IM), state influence on all types of institutions and “ operational psychology ”. Through targeted psychological impairment or damage, the Stasi attempted to deprive dissidents and opposition members, who were perceived as opponents or enemies , of the opportunity for further “hostile actions”, i.e. political activity.
