Artemis one we rise together back to the moon and Beyond” To much celebration, NASA’s Space Launch System made a spectacularly successful first test flight on 16 November 2022. This is a huge milestone, but it’s only the first step in a very complex plan to establish the first permanent settlement on the Moon. NASA still has a lot of work to do to ensure the whole programme is completed on time. The agency is also relying on today’s thriving private sector to get people back to the Moon faster and cheaper. So how exactly does NASA plan to build the first lunar base? All this and more on today’s episode of Great SpaceX: When the first astronaut plants her boots in the lunar soil in 2025 as part of Artemis III, assuming the current schedule holds, it will be the start of an even more ambitious project than sending humans back to the moon: NASA plans to construct a base camp somewhere among the gray dust and craggy rocks of the moon’s south pole. This lunar outpost will allow the Artemis missions to eventually shatter Apollo 17’s record for longest stay on the moon (74 hours, 59 minutes, 38 seconds), while serving as a jumping off point for in-depth exploration. NASA has selected SpaceX to provide the human landing system that will transport Artemis III astronauts from Orion in lunar orbit to the surface of the Moon and back again. SpaceX plans to use a unique concept of operations to increase the overall efficiency of their lander. After a series of tests, SpaceX will fly at least one uncrewed demo mission that lands Starship on the lunar surface. When Starship has met all of NASA’s requirements and high standards for crew safety, it will be ready for its first Artemis mission.
