This video is my tribute to the design of Tron 2.0, a 2003 game by Monolith meant to serve as an official sequel to Tron. It wasn’t until six years later that the official Tron: Legacy movie was conceived, leaving the game as our only animated window into what Tron could have looked like as a sequel.
While I am stoked to see Tron: Legacy, I have always thought that Tron 2.0 was a worthy sequel to the movie and am sad it wasn’t more of a success. Monolith did an utterly superb job not only making a Tron world believable, but extending it believably. From what I can tell about Tron: Legacy’s trailers, the story put forth in Tron 2.0 is only barely compatible with the movie -- one big difference between the movie and the game is that the main protagonist in the game is Alan’s son, while in the movie it’s Flynn’s son -- but it’s got a lot of backstory presented through reading emails located throughout the systems that go in a direction that makes sense.
