We hosted a Mahler 3 Watch Party on Friday 22 May 2020 at 7pm. We couldn’t play for you live at the time, but we will be there: players who took part in the 2017 performance will introduce the music, share their insights, and answer your questions in the comments during and after the stream.
Gustav Mahler’s monumental Third Symphony embraces heaven and Earth, nature and love. He deploys a huge orchestra, choirs and a solo singer to draw his listeners into a rich and compelling musical landscape.
It’s a work that means a lot to us at the Philharmonia Orchestra. Back in 1983, it was the first piece we played with an unknown young Finnish conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen. We hit it off straight away, and he was our Principal Conductor for 13 seasons between 2008 until 2020.
