Ongoing volcanic activity at the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano in Tonga on December 24th 2021. Volcanic activity has been observed for the last 5 days, causing ash clouds to be emitted in the Pacific Ocean up to 15km high. Flights have been stopped due to poor visibility. Explosions were heard up to 170km away. Air quality has been affected by the eruption, with warnings of acid rain issued for Tonga and surrounding countries. Citizens have been warned to stay away from the volcano, due to the risk of dangerous hazards. The last eruptions of the volcano were in 2014 and 2009 which formed a visible island at the undersea volcano. It is the latest in a series of volcanic eruptions that occurred across the world in 2021.
