PIPELINE - piano cover (originally performed by the Chantays)

PIPELINE is an instrumental originally released in 1963 by the Chantays and today it is considered one of the staples of the surf-rock genre. It was their only charting Billboard Top-40 hit. It has been recorded by other artists including the Ventures and more recently by Stevie Ray Vaughan for the ’87 movie ’Back to the Beach’. ’Pipeline’ in surfing jargon is when a wave closes over the surfer’s head while he rides it horizontally so it looks like he’s in a rolling pipe made of water (until it collapses, that is!) aka ’shooting the tube’. For you pianists out there, I threw in the glissandos to sound somewhat like the guitar slides and played it at about 76 bpm (the Chantays original recording was around 80 bpm). It is an easy and fun piece to play on piano.
