Zelensky says Hungary’s Orban has no reason to block Ukraine’s EU bid amid accession summit upcoming

The heads of the 27 EU countries will attend a summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday where the EU Commission has recommended they back the start of membership talks, as well as give the green light to a 50-billion-euro ($54 billion) economic aid package. The European Union’s chief executive Ursula Von der Leyen called on Wednesday for the bloc to support Ukraine as long as it takes. However, Hungary is opposed to granting Ukraine more financial aid and has threatened to veto plans to advance Kyiv’s EU membership bid at a summit. Ukraine’s President Zelensky said on Wednesday that Orbán has no reason to block Ukraine’s accession to EU. Meanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday he hoped to open enlargement talks between the European Union and Ukraine before the end of his country’s six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the EU on Dec. 31.
