The second thing people want is safety and cleanliness. They don’t want to get shot on the way to the grocery store. They don’t want their house broken into or their car broken into. They want the police to find whoever did it and prosecute them. And they want all of this because these are the basic functions of government. These are all reasons we have government. If your government can’t even respond to a car break-in or an armed robbery or a home invasion or a violent mentally ill person taking a dump on the sidewalk in front of your house, then that government has no legitimacy and shouldn’t exist.
