Most of us learned in school that Christopher Columbus ’discovered’ America in 1492. However, there are theories and pieces of
evidence suggesting that African people may have reached the Americas long before Columbus. Let’s take a closer look.“
One of the key proponents of this idea was historian and linguist Dr. Ivan Van Sertima. In his book ’They Came Before Columbus,’
published in 1976, Van Sertima presents arguments and evidence to support the notion of pre-Columbian African contact with the
Americas.“
“Van Sertima and other researchers point to several lines of evidence, including ancient maps, cultural similarities, and even physical
artifacts. For example, the famous Olmec heads found in Mexico, which date back to around 1200 BCE, feature facial features that
some believe resemble those of African people.
