Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett wrote this beautiful mele and is recorded here by Natalie Ai Kamauu from her ’E CD. (it was originally recorded by ’Ale’a in 2002.) Kawaikapu compares the Hawaiian Islands to a string of pearls, adorning the gods and pays tribute to Haloa, the progenitor of all people, and Kane, the god of fresh water and creation. I saw my kupuna dancing this song with me on the beach in a dream and took it as a sign to teach it to them as we prepare for our trip back to Hawai’i Island and Maui.
