He was born in New Hampshire, but relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1994. After several years of playing local clubs and supporting such acts as Alison Krauss, he released his first album in 2001. As of 2022, he has released 14 albums. Rod Picott sings thoughtful songs for the working man. His tunes have been recorded by esteemed songwriters like Fred Eaglesmith, Ray Wylie Hubbard and his childhood buddy Slaid Cleaves.
