Художник Репин и его усадьба «Пенаты» 1899-1914 The Artist I. Repin and his manor “Penates” 1899-1914 Music: Suite in the old style by A. Schnittke played here by the Ensemble “Impromptu“. In 1899, the renowned Russian realist painter, whose great works include Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873), Religious Procession in Kursk Province (1883) and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1880–91), bought a small house in the village of Kuokkala (Repino). The village, was at that time part of the Duchy of Finland. Located some 30 km (19 mi) northwest of St. Petersburg on the Gulf of Finland. In this quiet, secluded location, the artist lived and worked, together with his wife. Repin lived at the manor for 30 years and is buried in the grounds. Many well known personages visited the Repins - including Maxim Gorky , Korney Chukovsky (Poet, journalist and critic), Vladimir Mayakovsky, and the composers, Lyadov and Glazunov, together with the great bass singer Feodor Chiliapin.....
