Miriam Makeba ’Amampondo’ (the Breathing song) live Cuba 1972

Miriam Makeba - ’Amampondo’ is referred to as the ’breathing song’ in an interview she made about the South African Khosa language. Miriam became stateless in 1960 when South Africa cancelled her passport due to her being critical of apartheid when in the US. In response eight countries gave her citizenship, including Belgium, Guinea and Cuba - here she is performing in Cuba. Later the USA revoked her visa after she married Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael, so she went to live in Guinea, and became a UN representative for them. She was a highly influential figure in the international fight against apartheid.
