During Lent the TLS students sing the Litany during the prayers at chapel. This particular rendition is an English translation of Luther’s edition of the Litany with a musical setting by Johann Spangenberg, a Lutheran pastor and one of the great reformer’s contemporaries. It can be found in The Lutheran Hymnal, #661; however, this version does not contain the music for the officiant’s part. For this we consulted the 1944 Music for the Liturgy, which provides the entire musical ordinary for the Common Service and the occasional services, as well as music for other liturgical pieces.
