A Masked Ball • Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera • Livermore Valley Opera
A Masked Ball. The words alone create notions of mystery, intrigue and romance. Verdi’s powerful opera, Un Ballo in Maschera, contains all of those and more.
In the story, the King loves the wife of his best friend, unaware that she returns his love. Her husband
discovers their love, and believes that he has been cuckolded. To get revenge, he joins conspirators who also want to kill the King. He kills the King at a masked ball, never realizing until too late that the King and his wife are innocent of any wrongdoing.
