The Elizabeth Jonas of 1559 was the first large English galleon, built in Woolwich Dockyard from 1557 and launched in July 1559.
The vessel’s keel was laid in 1557, for a ship of 800 tons burthen to replace Henry VIII’s prestige warship, the Henry Grace a Dieu, which had been destroyed by fire in 1553.
The Elizabeth Jonas was built in 1559 at the shipyard of Matthew Baker in Deptford, England. Matthew Baker was one of the most renowned shipbuilders of his time, and he was responsible for designing and building many of the ships in the English navy.
She was a square-rigged galleon of four masts, including two lateen-rigged mizzenmasts.
The Elizabeth Jonas was one of the largest ships built at the time, with a length of over 150 feet and a beam of around 44 feet. She was a three-masted ship with a displacement of around 600 tons. Her hull was constructed from oak planks, and she was equipped with a variety of armaments, including cannons, culverins, and falcons.
Originally intended to be named Edward after Edward VI, she was renamed when Elizabeth I came to the in 1559, accounts of the time relate that she was named Elizabeth Jonas by Elizabeth herself, “in rememberance of being preserved from Her enemies, no less miraculously than the phrophet Jonas was preserved from the belly of a whale“.
Her construction was part of a larger effort to build up the English navy in response to the growing threat of Spanish invasion. The Elizabeth Jonas was one of several ships built at the time, and she was intended to serve as a powerful warship that could defend England’s shores and project English power overseas.
Overall, the construction of the Elizabeth Jonas was a significant feat of engineering for its time, and it helped to establish England’s reputation as a naval power in the 16th century.
