Mussorgsky - Hopak from ’The Fair at Sorochyntsi’ (Original arrangement)

While Mussorgsky’s Hopak is a fairly popular piece, in terms of piano solo most of the recordings online are Rachmaninov’s version, and it seems like the composer’s own arrangement doesn’t get enough love. Thanks for listening! About the work: Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839–1881) was a Russian composer, one of the group known as ’The Five’. He was an innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period, and many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other national themes. The Fair at Sorochyntsi is a comic opera in three acts: the composer wrote the libretto himself, which is based on Nikolai Gogol’s short story of the same name. The best-known numbers from Fair are the orchestral Introduction and the closing Hopak. Mussorgsky also arranged the Hopak and the market scene for piano solo. #piano #classicalmusic #mussorgsky
