The attack scene lasts a staggering 37 minutes, and large parts of it are effectively scored with no music at all. But once the Japanese call off the third wave, the film changes gear as the Americans start to take stock of the damage. First comes the chaos (this clip), and then, inevitably, the despair (see Part 2). Hans Zimmer doesn’t hold back.
