💜 ‘Go Go’ is classic BTS in its coupling of a catchy refrain with cutting observations of society. The repetition of the words “YOLO YOLO YOLO YO” hints at a carpe diem philosophy that borders on excessive but, in reality, the song dives into young people’s low expectations of life. South Korea has an incredibly high youth unemployment rate (the song was made in 2017), and many young people have become disheartened when looking at their own future. Owning a home, for example, is a dream that many will never see fulfilled. As a result, there is a culture among some that’s kind of like, “F*** it, our future is screwed anyway, so what are we saving for? Let’s just enjoy now.” This song is set against that backdrop. “YOLO“ is an acronym for “you only live once“. Along the same lines as the Latin carpe diem (seize the day), it is a call to live life to its fullest extent, even embracing behavior that carries inherent risk.
