(Grigory Sokolov | 2012 | Live) Mozart: Piano Sonata No.8 in A minor,

All the great pianists have their own distinct playing style at the piano, but only a handful of them have bonded with it so completely that it sings with its own voice under their hands. This recording illustrates that as well as any with Sokolov. Some of you might have opinions on Sokolov’s dense, or “controlled“ playing style in the classics incidentally. I know what you mean, and up until the wonderful drama he made of here in 2012 I never could get used to it either. I’d like to discuss that however since I have some thoughts about it, but I need Beatrice Rana to do so - who originally made me question the almost childish way we’ve been taught to look at Mozart’s music, through her superb with Luisi earlier this year.
