THE SUGARCUBES – EAT THE MENU This week in 1989, THE SUGARCUBES released their second studio album, HERE TODAY, TOMORROW NEXT WEEK! (September 1989). With an album title plucked from the whimsical pages of Wind In The Willows, HERE TODAY, TOMORROW NEXT WEEK! saw more emphasis on brash dance rhythms compared to the previous year’s debut album, ’Life’s Too Good’. The album offered a contagious bounce, armed with rousing choruses like ’Bee’, ’Shoot’ and ’Dear Plastic’. Funky horns peppered ’Tidal Wave’ and whirling strings carouselled ’Planet’, while Magga Ornolfsdottir’s decorative keyboards meshed tightly with Thor Eldon’s guitar over which singers Bjork Gudmundsdottir and Einar Orn ricocheted off each other like gleeful dervishes. “In contrast to the former’s stunning voice, explosively combining impish precociousness and torchlit sensitivity, Orn’s babble vandalised all 13 tracks, probably more out of a need to remember the band’s anarchic roots than anything else,” wrote Martin Ashton for Q magazine i
