Youth AI Lab (YSS) #21: Dr. Yang Song — Advancements in Diffusion Models for Generative AI

To kick off our Youth Speaker Series, we are honored to have Dr. Yang Song joining us for a discussion around diffusion models for generative AI and their growing impact in pushing the boundaries of AI. Dr. Yang Song is a research scientist at OpenAI, as well as an incoming assistant professor in Electrical Engineering and Computing Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Dr. Song’s research focuses on developing scalable methods for modeling, analyzing, and generating complex, high-dimensional data, with interests spanning generative modeling, representation learning, probabilistic inference, AI safety, and AI for science. His ultimate goal is to develop methods that are both accessible and effective, build intelligent systems that can improve human lives, and address problems that have wide-ranging significance. Dr. Song’s research accomplishments include developing a novel technique for generating images by training a network to unscramble noisy images, which has been implemented in OpenAI’s DALLE2. He has published extensively on topics such as consistency models, diffusion models, learning to generate data, solving inverse problems in medical imaging, and constructing unrestricted adversarial examples with generative models. Before joining OpenAI, Dr. Song received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, where he was advised by Stefano Ermon. He also worked as a research intern at Google Brain, Uber ATG (hosted by Raquel Urtasun, Chief Scientist of Uber), and Microsoft Research.
