End of Summer is created by Björn Carlström and Stefan Thunberg and produced by Per Janérus and Björn Carlström for Harmonica Films in co-production with Film i Skåne and SF Studios. Executive producers are Anders de la Motte, Jens Jonsson, Tim King, Joakim Rang Strand, Sara Askelöf, Camilla Rydbacken and Helena Larand. The series is directed by Jens Jonsson (Young Wallander, The Hunters) and Henrik Georgsson (The Bridge, The Man Who Played with Fire).
The series takes us back to a late summer’s day in 1984, when a five-year-old boy named Billy suddenly disappears from a remote farm in the idyllic landscape of the south part of Sweden. Despite engaging the whole community in the search, the boy is nowhere to be found and soon rumors and allegations of his disappearance start to circulate. The fumbling investigation led by the perplexed local police force is soon to be closed, leaving the traumatized family in the dark, slowly breaking them apart.
Twenty years later, the boy’s older sister Vera is leading a group session in psychotherapy in Stockholm, when a young man suddenly joins the group, confessing to experiencing inexplicable childhood memories of a boy’s disappearance. The story is hauntingly familiar to her own, stirring up old memories Vera carefully buried a long time ago. Reluctantly Vera realizes that she must return to her childhood home and to her shattered family to seek the answer to the question nobody longer wants to ask. What really happened that summer, all those years ago when her little brother disappeared?
Author Anders de la Motte said: End of Summer is extremely close to my heart for many reasons. The series was filmed in a hot summer in my beautiful home area along the southern slope of Söderåsen, in the very places I imagined when I wrote the book. Seeing the story and the characters emerge from the pages and take on a life of their own is one of my greatest experiences. I am so happy that the Swedish viewers, through SkyShowtime, finally get to share it.
